Common Questions When Renting an RV
Renting an RV opens up a world of adventure—from spontaneous road trips to family camping vacations and everything in between. If you’ve never rented an RV before, it’s normal to have a lot of questions. At Suncoast RV Rental, we’ve helped thousands of families and travelers hit the road with confidence, and we’ve heard just about every question there is. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler trying something new or completely new to the road, here are the most common questions people ask when renting an RV.
1. What types of RVs can I rent?
RV rentals generally fall into a few main categories:
-
Class A Motorhomes: The largest and most luxurious, great for long trips and families.
-
Class C Motorhomes: Mid-sized with a cab-over bed, good for families or couples.
-
Class B Campervans: Compact and easy to drive, ideal for solo travelers or couples.
-
Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels: Towable RVs that require a compatible vehicle.
Suncoast RV Rental offers a wide selection of Class A and Class C motorhomes—clean, professionally maintained, and ready for your next trip. Not sure which one fits your needs? Just ask—we’ll help you choose the right RV for your travel style and group size.
2. Do I need a special license to drive an RV?
In most cases, no special license is required to drive a rental RV under 26,000 pounds in Florida or most other states. A standard U.S. driver’s license is all you need. However, we do recommend that renters feel confident driving larger vehicles and are familiar with RV basics. Suncoast RV Rental provides a thorough orientation at pickup so you feel comfortable before hitting the road.
3. Is it hard to drive an RV?
It’s easier than you might think! While RVs are bigger than passenger vehicles, they’re designed to be user-friendly. Class C RVs in particular handle similarly to a large van or truck. When you rent from us, we’ll walk you through how to safely drive, turn, park, and back up your RV. Many customers report that after a few minutes on the road, they feel right at home.
4. What’s included in the RV rental?
When you rent an RV from Suncoast RV Rental, you’ll receive:
-
A clean, sanitized RV
-
Fresh water and propane tanks filled
-
Power cords and adapters
-
Sewer hoses and gloves
-
Basic kitchenware (available as an add-on)
-
Generator use (available as an add-on)
You can also add convenience packages that include linens, cookware, outdoor chairs, and more—great for first-timers who don’t want to pack everything themselves.
5. Where can I camp in an RV?
There are thousands of campgrounds and RV parks across Florida and the U.S., including:
-
Private RV parks with hookups, pools, and amenities
-
State and national parks with scenic views and hiking trails
-
Boondocking locations for off-grid camping (not available in all rentals)
Many RVers use websites like Campendium, Recreation.gov, or KOA.com to find and reserve campsites. Some RV parks get booked months in advance, especially in peak seasons, so we recommend planning ahead.
6. How do the RV hookups work?
Hooking up your RV is simple once you get the hang of it. Most campgrounds offer:
-
Electric hookups (30 or 50 amp) for power
-
Water hookups for fresh water
-
Sewer hookups to empty your gray and black tanks
We’ll show you how to connect everything safely during your rental orientation. If you stay somewhere without hookups (called “dry camping”), your RV’s generator, battery, and water tanks will support you for a limited time.
7. Can I bring my pet?
Yes! Many of our RVs are pet-friendly, because we know pets are part of the family too. Just let us know you’re bringing a furry companion when booking so we can help you choose a suitable RV and review the pet policy.
8. How does insurance work for RV rentals?
When renting an RV, you’ll need insurance coverage for the vehicle. You have a few options:
-
Use your personal auto insurance if it extends to rental RVs (check with your agent)
-
Purchase coverage through a third-party provider
-
Use the insurance options offered by Suncoast RV Rental
We’ll walk you through the options and make sure you’re covered before your trip begins.
9. What happens if I need help on the road?
All Suncoast RV Rental units are well-maintained and undergo thorough inspections before pickup, but things can happen on the road. That’s why we offer 24 hour phone support for your peace of mind. If you have a question or issue during your trip, you can reach our team directly—we’re here to help.
10. How do I dump the RV tanks?
Your RV has two holding tanks:
-
Gray water tank: from sinks and showers
-
Black water tank: from the toilet
At most campgrounds, you’ll find a dump station where you can empty the tanks. We’ll show you exactly how to do this safely and cleanly. You can also add a tank emptying service upon return if you’d rather we take care of it.
11. How far in advance should I book?
RV rentals book up fast—especially during holidays, school breaks, and events. We recommend booking at least 2–3 months in advance for summer and winter trips. The earlier you reserve, the more options you’ll have for RV models and travel dates.
12. Can I take the RV out of state?
Yes! Many renters take RVs across the U.S. and even into Canada with prior approval. Just let us know your travel plans when booking so we can confirm coverage and any restrictions. Certain areas (like off-road or festival use) may require additional permissions.
